The Future Of The Future

212. James Robson. Ethical Data Sharing.

Episode Notes

Data sits at the heart of almost everything modern organisations do—but the more valuable data becomes, the more important it is to know how to use it responsibly.

In this episode, I’m joined by James Robson, a data protection and responsible-data specialist who works with charities, research organisations and other mission-led teams to handle sensitive data, enable responsible data sharing and build trust.

He brings a particularly interesting perspective because his experience spans both the public and mission-driven sectors: in 2023, James became Data Protection Officer for the UK Labour Party, giving him first-hand experience of managing data protection in one of the UK’s most complex political organisations.

Today, his focus is on helping organisations move beyond simply complying with privacy rules toward using responsible data practices as a foundation for trust and innovation.

We’ll explore what ethical data sharing really means, whether GDPR should be seen as a brake or a growth lever, how Europe and the US approach data differently, and what happens to all of this as AI fundamentally changes how data is collected, analysed and used.
